I am currently living in Orange County, California with my husband and puppy. It took me years of personal development, therapy, heartbreak, and experience (both personally and professionally) to connect with the wonderful man I am with – someone who values continuous growth, honesty, and authenticity just as much as I do. In fact, I think it took me all this time and internal work to be ready for a great relationship. Believe me, I have had my fair share of bad relationships and therapy, so I get it. And though it was very difficult at times, I feel very grateful for everything I have been through.
This doesn't mean our relationship is perfect either - we have to both be intentional about our choices and continuously commit to the practices that help us repair conflict and connect. We can’t experience joy without pain, and I truly believe that the pain we go through is the greatest teacher – you just have to listen. Conflict in a relationship is an opportunity to grow and heal ourselves and each other; that is one of my values when working with clients.
Before we can connect with our partners, we need to connect with ourselves. We cannot be authentic with our partners if we are unable to integrate and accept all parts of ourselves. We cannot be kind to and truly love another person if we are incapable of loving ourselves. We cannot create safety in the relationship if we are not congruent with ourselves. And we will never be perfect, we just need to be good enough. That is why I believe that our own work and healing is imperative to having a healthy and connected relationship, and that healing is the journey towards being whole.
DR. MAHA’S EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
I completed my Ph.D. in Psychology at University College London, UK, and have a Diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy accredited by the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT), UK. My training was based on an integrated approach that combines the fundamentals of Humanistic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral techniques, the Gestalt approach, Psychodynamic model, and IMAGO theory. I am currently a Certified Sexologist from the American College of Sexologists. I also obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. In addition, I have completed a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and Coach training, a Sports Psychology Coaching certification, and a Nature-Based Therapy course. I am also in the process of completing an Animal-Assisted Psychotherapy Certification and am incorporating Equine-Assisted experiences and activities into my approach. Working with horses can be a very powerful experience and can help clients create the shifts and achieve their goals more quickly.
Following my degrees, I worked as a Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist in my Private Practice in Beirut from 2010 until 2013. I was also actively involved in teaching Psychology courses at the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University, and really enjoyed interacting with students. I wanted to expand my horizons, so I moved to Dubai and joined The Psychology Center as a Licensed Psychologist. Over the years of practice, I have worked with hundreds of individuals and couples from all backgrounds who were experiencing relationship and/or sexual difficulties. I am also able to offer sessions in Arabic.
